Position Summary

Reporting to the Department Administrator/CFO, the Director of Revenue Cycle will be responsible for all billing activities for the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the implementation of policies and procedures for compliance with University and Federal guidelines, management of front-end, back-end and in-patient billing operations, third-party insurance carrier credentialing for new and existing full-time faculty, and supervision of the departmental billing staff. The Director of Revenue Cycle will serve as the departmental liaison to the Central Revenue Office.


Responsibilities

  • The Director will work with senior management to maximize clinical income, maximize profitability and productivity, and ensure best practices while fully complying with all third party payer reimbursement requirements. The Director will develop performance metrics by which effectiveness, efficiencies, responsiveness and productivity is measured; ensure compliance with all applicable external regulations as well as departmental and institutional policies and procedures; and oversee revenue cycle department including, staff, systems, compliance, revenue analysis and strategic planning. 

 

  • The Director will prepare monthly, quarterly, and fiscal year billing reports; monitor managed care contractual agreements and reimbursement trends; investigate billing problems and formulate and implement solutions. The Director will also implement strategies for compliance with rapidly changing managed care policies and Meaningful Use measures; educate and train physicians and staff with regard to internal billing systems; train staff and call center personnel on insurance company participation, policies, and identification; and conduct billing compliance coordination of medical records and billing source documents when requested.

 

  • The Director of Revenue Cycle will generate monthly financial statistical reports for the faculty and external practices; provide faculty education as it relates to all billing transactions; direct and schedule required training activities in adherence to department and University policies; oversee the collection of data, data entry, and submission into EPIC;  monitor all aspects of collections; compile and prepare reports for distribution to administration and faculty; serve as Department representative and attend internal and external meetings in order to stay informed about changes in all aspects of the billing and collections process; update fee schedules; and manage master profiles. 

 

  • The Director of Revenue Cycle will also be responsible for the administrative, financial, and managerial operations for the Billing Department; managing credentialing for new and existing full-time faculty; accessing documentation supporting medical service for appropriate billing of the reported service; assessing and monitoring of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding. 

 

  • The Director of Revenue Cycle will interact with physicians as required; process refunds to patients, insurance companies, and internal entities; and research returned checks for appropriate resolution. Working closely with the department’s financial manager, the Director will manage EPIC for monthly bank reconciliation and the disseminate information to all site managers and staff. 

 

  • The Director will serve as a key member of the department’s EPIC project management team.

 

  • The Director of Revenue Cycle will also perform other related duties and projects as required. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • This position requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus five years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Columbia University EMR- (EPIC).  
  • Knowledge of relevant reporting tools and experience with preparation, analysis, and presentation of report data.

Other Requirements

  • Contact with patients and/or research subjects Physician Billing 
  • Incumbent must have sufficient practical experience to correlate front-end and back-end systems including EPIC scheduling and revenue cycle work queues to affect comprehensive revenue cycle management. 
  • Knowledge of EPIC, Meaningful Use measures, CPT and ICD-10 codes, Microsoft applications, and comprehensive experience with Medicare, Medicaid, and Managed Care companies required. 
  • The incumbent must possess excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal/organization skills and experience with billing compliance regulations, financial management, and staff management. 
  • CPC required.
