The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 

Position Summary

The Director of Internal Events will build and implement centralized systems and processes for planning and executing events at Columbia Law School. Reporting to the Executive Director of Finance and Building Services, the Director will lead a small team with responsibilities that include event-related planning, budgeting and financial transaction management, communicating with and training Law School staff, managing space, and negotiating vendor relationships.  The Director will coordinate frequently with internal and external groups, and must possess advanced communication, technology, and project management skills.   


Responsibilities

  •  45 % - Management of internal events team responsible for coordinating core Law School services and setting policy for on campus events. Serves as the primary intake point of contact for internal clients (as well as external clients looking to reserve Law School space for their events) and interfaces with internal and external partners and vendors. Supports the planning and implementation of events and programming along with providing consultation to organizers to ensure all event logistics have been coordinated and communicated.
  • 15% - Supports organizers (e.g. faculty members, research centers, administrative offices) in developing budgets, ascertaining needs (e.g., catering, room setup, marketing), booking spaces, and making necessary arrangements with relevant partners (e.g., AV, Building Services, Public Safety, caterers) on their behalf.
  • 15 % - Develops, applies, and ensures adherence to Law School event planning policies and procedures. Oversees the management of a centralized Law School event planning calendar and space management system. Owns the Law School event planning website, making sure that it is accurate and up to date. Generates confirmations and/or invoices outlining services requested by the event organizer
  • 10 % - Provides training on workflow and best practices to Law School staff who plan events and programs. Periodically convene Law School event planners group to share updates and best practices.
  • 10 % - Manages the Internal Events team, supervising a small team. Provides direction, support, and professional development opportunities.
  • 5% - Attends and provides support to events as needed and performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred. A minimum of 4-6 years of directly related experience is required. Experience handling, prioritizing and executing multiple projects while providing high quality results. Must have excellent project management skills, be extremely well-organized, detail oriented, creative, and an effective communicator. Must be able to work with diverse constituencies and support an inclusive work environment. Other key attributes are as follows:

  • Successfully manage a team
  • Event experience in a University, major cultural institution or other comparable environment is desirable
  • Must be able to work some nights and weekends throughout the academic year
