Position Summary

The Desktop Support Technician will be responsible for all information systems administration, maintenance, and providing technical support to the Department of Emergency Medicine faculty and staff. This includes supporting multiple sites in New York City and Westchester, both in person and remotely.


Responsibilities

Reporting to the Department Administrator, the Desktop Support Technician will be responsible for all aspects of systems administration including maintenance, upgrades, installation and configuration, printing systems, fundamentals of security, and installing third-party software, and the recommendation for purchasing of new hardware, and inventory control.  The incumbent will also provide desktop, server, email, website support and technical assistance. Specific job duties will include, but not limited to:

  • Maintaining servers and customizing individual machines with software and hardware
  • Ensuring devices are scheduled for routine backups and end users are educated to maintain security of data
  • Maintaining and securing IT inventory; in collaboration with Finance, strategically procuring and stocking inventory
  • Configuring, installing and maintaining various peripheral devices; including devices to support Epic utilization
  • Upgrading computer systems, memory, motherboards, drives and tape backup units
  • Installing new software packages and upgrading various software packages ensuring current licensing of product
  • Answer user inquiries and provide training when applicable
  • Troubleshooting and resolving PC, servers and peripheral malfunctions
  • Providing desktop, server and website support and technical assistance, including the department’s electronic health record system (Epic) and image management system.
  • Evaluating and recommending hardware/software solutions and purchases
  • Supporting the fundamental networking/distributed computing environment concepts
  • Maintaining security levels and access to data
  • Maintaining complete technology inventory controls
  • Partnering with the Ortho IT Pod on cross coverage and training
  • Serving as departmental liaison to CUMC and P&S for all ITS related matters

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education, training, and experience plus at least two years directly related experience required. 
  • Familiar with Windows 7 & 10 and Mac OS X with a strong working knowledge of basic office software applications (MS Office 2013/16, Adobe, Java, etc.) and Office365 applications such as SharePoint and OneDrive.
  • Knowledge of networking, server, and phone systems
  • Relevant Computer Certifications

  • Experience in a University or Hospital setting

  • Superior ability to identify, diagnose and resolve hardware/software problems

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 
  • Proficiency and experience in Windows workstations and operating systems
  • Possess a thorough and demonstrated understanding of all networking principles, including installing, configuring, upgrading and troubleshooting server and desktop hardware and software for PCs, Macs and various servers, printers, and scanners
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to collaborate with technical personnel
  • Success in delivering projects on time and within budget
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to participate in and implement large-scale hardware and software deployments
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong critical thinking skills
