Position Summary

Columbia University’s Wellness Center is home to Columbia’s Community Health Worker (CHW) Training Institute called ‘InTOuCH.’ This program recruits trusted members of churches from West and Central Harlem to complete an 8-week, certified CHW training curriculum. The Clinical Research Coordinator will be responsible for supporting these certified CHWs in an initiative to increase access to depression screening among African American church members. They will support recruitment, weekly management, and supervision.


  • Work directly with church leadership, community health workers, and faculty from the Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
  • Support CHWs in their provision of depression screening in Central & West Harlem; offering mental health treatment referrals, and providing Motivational Interviewing to community members.
  • Works closely with program coordinator, assisting in managing health workers of a faith-based depression screening study.
  • Primary responsibility for identifying and selecting community health workers to serve as screeners for the depression study.
  • Responsible for recruiting new church study sites.
  • Facilitates introductory meetings and on site orientation sessions with participating church leadership.
  • Provides performance modeling and reviews of CHW field screening activities.
  • Assists with follow-up calls to CHWs regarding scheduling and work intervals.
  • Interfaces with CHW team members on emerging issues and operational barriers observed in the field. Will communicate these issues to staff and assist in resolving problem issues.
  • Confers with team members about individual or group concerns over work assignments (safety, issues of trust, assignment appropriateness, or other matters impacting worker effectiveness).
  • Will assess the effectiveness of new CHW team members based on performance in the field.
  • Responsible for working to keep up worker morale. Also, facilitates team debriefings on field experiences.
  • Tracks and monitors CHW attendance and punctuality of arrival to assignments.
  • Meets with study supervisor to discuss and resolve problem issues.
  • Attend booster trainings, conduct monthly team meeting with CHWs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience required.
  • Two years of related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in sociology, psychology or related field.
  • Graduate of Columbia’s certified CHW Training Institute called ‘InTOuCH’.
  • Be in good standing with ZMBBI Wellness Center leaders as a Community Health Worker.
  • Be an active member of a local church in West or Central Harlem.
  • Conducted at least one prior church-based health screening event.
  • Knowledge of health disparities research.
  • Familiar with Institutional Review board protocols, databases, etc.
  • Experience developing, distributing, and evaluating research studies.

Other Requirements

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple diverse projects.
  • Flexibility in hours (i.e., will work some evenings and at least 1 Saturday/month).
