The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Associate Director of Business Analytics, the Business Analyst - Research oversees Columbia Universities Irving Medical Center’s (CUIMC) process for vetting and approving researchers’ requests for clinical data, which is known as the Tripartite Request Assessment Committee (TRAC) process. This role works with operational, clinical, and academic staff including senior leadership to review analytics requests, provide status updates, set expectations, and make plans.
Additionally, this position writes specifications for analytics projects after interviewing requestors. This individual must demonstrate excellent written English, attention to detail, strong customer service focus and ability to coordinate with a wide variety of staff.
Hybrid Schedule: Subject to business needs, we may support flexible and hybrid work arrangements. Options will be discussed during the interview process. Must live within the Tri-State area (New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut).
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- TRAC Process Management: Oversees and coordinates CUIMC’s portion of a cross-institutional and research-focused report request process, including validating request content, communicating with requesters and research sponsors, reviewing requests with leadership, and assigning requests out to both embedded and decentralized analytics resources. (50%)
- Project Management and Technical Writing: Scopes, develops, distributes, and provides support for content in a timely manner, using Epic’s proprietary suite of BI Tools and additional institutional BI applications. Takes ownership of assigned incidents and requests by performing in-depth analysis and creating detailed intake forms. Prioritizes multiple requests and maintaining a support relationship with all users. (15%)
- Progress Reporting: Reports to the Irving Institute and its Biomedical Informatics Resource (BMIR) on activities and support provided to researchers for the ongoing evaluation of services. Also fulfills required reporting, including the annual progress report (RPPR) to the NIH, as well as updates for annual External and Internal Advisory Committee meetings and other needs. (10%)
- Compliance and Best Practices: Maintains knowledge of industry standards and best practices, including HIPAA, IRB, and data governance policies and procedures to ensure all deliverables meet those standards. (10%)
- Technical Documentation: Organizes the development of institutional data dictionaries to streamline future reporting needs. (5%)
- Continuous Improvement: Seeks out additional training to improve skills in the team’s technologies and new technologies, and to improve soft skills for better client and team relations. (5%)
- Other Duties Performs other job-related duties as needed. (5%)
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four (4) years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Science related field, Medical Informatics, Information Systems, Technical Writing or similar discipline, or equivalent education and experience.
- Two years of clinical, research or regulatory reporting experience.
- Two years of related full-time work experience; significant relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
- At least one EPIC certification in a related application. If not present at the time of hire, it must be acquired within 6 months of employment.
- Excellent decision making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with an emphasis on detail and follow-up.
- Master’s or other advanced degree in Science, Analytics, Information Systems, or a similar discipline.
- Experience with Epic report development and application-focused data models and workflows.
- Experience with Power BI, Cognos, and/or other popular BI tools.
