Position Summary

Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Classroom & Academic Computing; the Associate Support Technician is responsible for all aspects of Academic Computing support, operation, and security of campus-wide electronic learning environments, conference rooms, specialty rooms, videoconferencing events, and high-end events.


Responsibilities

  • Works in collaboration with other members of the Classroom & Academic Computing team and provides direct support to clients and participants to ensure successful execution of technical and multimedia elements. Serves as an expert on all AV systems and technical best practices.
  • Assists the Sr. Support Technician of Event Technology with: planning and scheduling of events; training of event organizers in the use of virtual and live event technologies; conducting dry-runs with event organizers and talent; and, the creation of production timelines and run-of-shows.
  • Performs videography tasks, including: filming, staging, live streaming and setting up video overflows.
  • Provides edits and trims of all audio and video produced by the team. Ensures the proper storage of all audio-visual digital assets and provides access to these resources, as needed.
  • Responsible for the proper safe-guarding, maintenance, support, manage inventory control, and producing relevant documentation of AV/IT systems hardware, including production equipment, computing systems hardware, kiosk PC hardware, media presentation systems, audio visual components, network issues, lecture capture technologies and related equipment that exist in these facilities.
  • Trains and supervises part-time casual staff and work-study students in standard operating procedure. Provides direct client training as well as support at time of installation, deployment, or repair. Periodically provide onsite training for Columbia University faculty, staff, and students on the operation of AV/IT systems for events and classes.
  • Remains up-to-date with industry best practices and technological trends in the AV industry. Actively pursues opportunities for professional development, including technical certifications.
  • Function with the strict guidelines of service level agreements and provides support coverage during operational hours.
  • Makes key snap-decisions and judgement with respect to classroom equipment operation and programming
  • Loads AV coding & configurations to classroom equipment.
  • Provides technical support locally, remotely, and/or by telephone.
  • Monitors automated reports and/or responds to alerts for multiple hard/software issues.
  • Provides on-call support from Client Support Services, end users, developers, and operations staff, or automated tools regarding availability, performance or functionality problems.
  • Provides procurement for specific and assigned facilities, hardware and/or services.
  • Provides excellent customer service and maintains good relationships with clients and department/school administration.
  • Interacts with colleagues from other CUIT groups with whom he/she relies upon for regular collaboration.
  • Knowledge of personal computer and audiovisual hardware.
  • Directly assist and train part-time field operation employees.
  • Check and respond to emergency emails during off-hours.
  • May be required to work outside normal work hours to meet demands and deadlines.
  • May be required to lead projects and supervise contract work.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required.
  • Minimum 2-4 years’ related experience.
  • Knowledge of AV/IT Systems hardware and/or Classroom Technologies.
  • Familiarity with Windows OS and MacOS hardware and related software.
  • Must be able to perform manual labor when required (e.g. paper deliveries, computer furniture/equipment, A/V furniture/equipment). Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (e.g. AV/IT system hardware).
  • Completes work on time and to expected standards. Must be self-motivated and detail oriented.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal and external personnel.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in a variety of competencies including teamwork/collaboration, analytical thinking, communication and influencing skills, and technical expertise.
  • Ability to work with changing priorities and with multiple projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AV control systems hardware and software e.g Crestron, Extron, QSC, etc.
  • General knowledge of the AV systems programming language, e.g. Crestron SIMPL, Extron Global Configurator, QSC Designer Software, etc.
  • Experience with unified communications, streaming, and digital media systems.
  • Experience supporting lecture capture systems; hardware and software.
  • Basic understanding of network protocols and configurations.
  • Previous experience in higher education.
  • Self-motivated and detail oriented.  
  • A+ Certification.
  • CTS Certification.
