The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Student Relations in the Career Advancement Center (CAC) at the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), the Associate Director plays a critical role in the delivery of career management services and support to many of SIPA’s 1400 students across six academic concentrations and various specialized programs, and to some of the School’s 800+ recruiting organizations.

Key Responsibilities

Provides career advisement to SIPA students and alumni on the complete range of career planning and job search issues; researches and develops programs and job search strategies for students seeking career advancement or change; and remains able and available to coordinate and teach the required Professional Development core course, including critiquing assignments and assigning grades.  May be required to design and teach PD electives.

Develops and leads a variety of group events on career management topics, including workshops on interviewing, writing effective resumes and cover letters, and pursuing internship opportunities. Liaises with the University’s International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) on some career-related workshops.

Assesses the quality and suitability of internships and awards credit for SIPA’s curricular internship requirement and develops quantitative application evaluation metrics. Administers the $100K annual Travel Grant budget, $28K in various internship grants, and the $21K Off-campus Work-Study budget, and works with SIPA Financial Aid to disburse grant funds.

Leads external communications initiatives on behalf of the Career Advancement Center, including social media outreach, and liaises with different school constituencies in these efforts; oversees the development and maintenance of career-related resources on the SIPA website, and researches and edits numerous publications developed by CAC. Implements and maintains the Internship portion of the career services software, instructs students on its use and troubleshoots any problems that may arise with either student or employer users.

Co-supervises one full-time administrative assistant and three part-time graduate student assistants and co-manages the SIPA student adviser program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required.  Must have a minimum of two years of professional experience in a related field, such as human resources, counseling, education, or recruiting.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills required.

  • Strong ability to lead career-related workshops and classes required. 

  • Must be tactful, flexible, and able to interact with all levels of the school administration and outside employers.

  • Strong computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Expertise with social media preferred.
  • Master's degree in a related field, such as education administration, counseling, or international or public affairs, strongly preferred.
