Position Summary

The Assistant Director, Prospect Research is responsible for supporting the Development and Alumni Relations team with accurate and timely prospect research in order to meet its fundraising goals. The successful candidate will provide detailed donor reports and event biographies to be used by those soliciting major gifts on behalf of Columbia Law School. This position will also assist in the maintenance of current and accurate data in the donor database, monitor online news sources to keep abreast of Columbia Law School alumni and notable events, and identify new prospects. In addition, the position performs research on an ad-hoc basis in response to the needs of the Development and Alumni Relations department. The Assistant Director, Prospect Research reports to the Director of Prospect Research and Strategy.


  • Use multifunctional information resources, including Lexis-Nexis and iWave Prospect Research Online, and other web-based resources (including, but not limited to, Factiva, Wealth-X, Candid (Foundation Directory), EDGAR-SEC, etc.) to develop carefully researched and concisely written research reports of donors and prospective donors for the use of the Dean and Development and Alumni Relations colleagues, including senior development staff and major gift officers. Depending on the request, research reports may include detailed career histories, financial information (including compensation, stockholdings, real estate assessments, and philanthropy), civic affiliations, personal information, alumni activity and cultivation summaries. 
  • Under the guidance of the Director of Prospect Research and Strategy, participate in pro-active and reactive projects involving the identification of prospects, rating recommendations, gift officer portfolio refinements, and other projects as assigned. 
  • Write detailed event biographies for fundraising-related functions attended by the Dean. 
  • Monitor and on-line news sources for Columbia Law School alumni employment changes and other appointments. 
  • Pro-actively monitor and request updates of biographical information held on Raiser’s Edge, including relationship and contact information. 

  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • Minimum of two years of prospect research experience in a development or related setting. An interest in prospect development, with an awareness of best practices and a wide knowledge of prospect research resources is desired.
    • Must have strong online research skills in identifying and analyzing complex financial information, including SEC and IRS 990 filings.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Highly organized with strong attention to detail, with proven ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects in a busy environment.
    • Possess a strong work ethic and professional demeanor, as well as exercise initiative and independent judgment.
    • Proficiency or knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and/or BSR Advance is highly desired.
    • Advanced Microsoft Word and Excel skills preferred.   
    • Must be able to work with diverse constituencies and support an inclusive work environment.                                                           

    This position will be a hybrid position including both on-site and remote days.
