The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 

Position Summary

Performs various tasks, including driving Observatory vehicles in support of the shipping/receiving department. Voluntary overtime opportunities to assist Buildings & Grounds personnel in snow removal or emergency operations may be extended. The routine work week is 40 hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM, with a ½ hour unpaid lunch break and a 20 minute paid mid-afternoon break.


Responsibilities

  • Assists in all operations of the Traffic department, including shipping & receiving, mail & package deliveries, solid waste management, warehouse operations, moving, transport of materials on and off campus, and related duties as assigned.

  • Operates various vehicles, including cargo vans, pickup trucks, and forklift trucks. May be required to provide passenger transportation periodically.

  • Packs materials and scientific equipment for transport by truck, sea, and air. Due diligence and a high standard of care are required.

  • Staff loading dock for most deliveries, but will also receive materials across campus, occasionally requiring leased hoisting equipment or coordination with crane operator.

  • Pick-up of hazardous & universal waste, including recyclable material. Delivery and transport of chemicals, including compressed gas cylinders. Application of safety guidelines as required.

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be furnished and, under certain circumstances, may be required for handling materials. Ongoing general safety training provided.

  • Safety proficiency will be required as a condition of continued employment.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or six months of equivalent experience, valid driver's license (maintained in good standing without violation) required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Should have knowledge of the Metropolitan area, including airports.
  • Routine lifting up to 70 pounds, non-routine lifting or material transport utilizing appropriate moving equipment, occasionally required. 
  • Prior safety training is highly preferred. 
  • Forklift driving, IATA, DOT, and prior shipping experience (both domestic and international) preferred.
