Position Summary

The Bronx Prevention Center, part of ICAP at Columbia University, is a Clinical Research Site (CRS), physically located in the south Bronx.  The site has over ten years of experience conducting studies in HIV prevention and COVID-19 prevention and care in underserved communities, advancing ICAP’s vision of healthy people, empowered communities, and thriving societies.

Reporting to the Site Manager, the Community Outreach Coordinator will lead the recruitment of participants for the grant -funded clinical research studies conducted at the site by building collaborations with health facilities, harm reduction and substance use treatment programs, social service agencies, community stakeholders, LGTBQ+ support services and other community groups and agencies in the Bronx and NYC metropolitan area. 



  • Conduct all participant recruitment activities in accordance with the study protocol and study-specific procedures and other appropriate institutional regulations, procedures and policies, including procedures to safeguard confidentiality of study participants (5%)
  • Build strategic relationships to support the CRS overall mission and aims of the study (5%)
  • Design and maintain social media platforms and accounts to promote recruitment and retention of study participants from various ages, races and cultures (5%)
  • Organize/Conduct a variety of outreach activities to recruit and retain participants for research studies at BPC. (10%)
  • Develop and implement recruitment, outreach and education plans and programs including the site’s Community Engagement Work Plan for Covid 19, other studies conducted at the site, and collaborating with community outreach workers from external health organizations (10%)
  • Train, develop and lead a team of community outreach program assistants to recruit study participants in the Bronx and the surrounding areas. (10%)
  • Plan, organize, and implement participant recruitment events such as community-wide educational groups and study related information dissemination events . (10%) 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with collaborative community partners and cultivate new ones in order to gain access to individuals or communities at risk of HIV infection (10%)
  • Participate in regular meetings with site leadership and study staff to ensure high-quality performance of job responsibilities. (10%)
  • Attend site and study related trainings, and meetings and conferences as requested by the site leadership (10%)
  • Conduct outreach within healthcare systems (5%)
  • Be the point person for communication with research network community working groups (5%)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by site leadership (5%)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (Public Health, Health Education, Human Services, Humanities) or equivalent in education & experience and 2 years of related experience.
  • Minimum two years of experience or experience in successful community outreach or recruitment activities or any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform job functions
  • Experience working with substance using populations, particularly injection drug users and individuals with opiate use disorder
  • Experience working with LGBTQ+ populations
  • Capacity to conduct street and community outreach appropriately tailored to populations of diverse gender and racial identities and diverse sexual orientations
  • Ability to interact with the public, healthcare providers, community organizations and social service agencies
  • Experience working with diverse, medically underserved populations
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (both verbal and in writing) and organizational skills
  • High proficiency in MS Office Applications (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Power Point)
  • Experience working with a variety of social media platforms
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team and independently
  • Supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated sound judgment, initiative and discretionary abilities
  • Able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS , HIV risk reduction (including PrEP), and harm reduction strategies for drug using individuals are critical
  • Cultural competency a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Spanish-speaking
  • Knowledge of New York City communities
  • Knowledge of the New York City substance use treatment and harm reduction organizations
  • Graphic design and illustration skills
  • Knowledge regarding the COVID-19 pandemic

Other Requirements

  • No international travel required; travel to national conferences/meetings up to 3-4 times a year
