Position Summary

The Assistant Athletics Director for Championship Performance is responsible for enhancing the overall performance of Columbia student-athletes and varsity sports programs. This position directs all mental preparation and oversees well-being and leadership, sports nutrition, and Success Through Well-Being data management and analysis. The position is responsible for assessing the psychological skills of performance improvement for student-athletes and varsity sports programs, designing resources and conducting team workshops and group sessions related to the improvement of athletic and mental performance, providing consultation and training to coaches on how they can integrate and apply mental training with their student-athletes, and providing mental performance training to student-athletes upon referral.The Assistant Athletics Director for Championship Performance serves as a resource for coaches, student-athletes, and staff.The Assistant Athletics Director for Championship Performance will contribute to the maintenance of good working relationships with all members of the Department, University Health Services, and University community.The Associate Athletics Director for Championship Performance shall exhibit the highest professional standards and ethical behavior with adherence to NCAA, Council of Ivy League Presidents, University, and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education rules and regulations


Responsibilities

  • Conduct team workshops and group sessions related to the improvement of athletic and mental performance.
  • Provide consultation and training to coaches on how they can integrate and apply mental training with their student-athletes.
  • Provide mental performance training to student-athletes upon referral.
  • Assess the psychological skills of performance improvement for student-athletes and varsity sports programs(i.e. anxiety control, visualization, concentration, goal setting).

  • Design resources for varsity sports programs and student-athletes to support performance improvement objectives.
  • Supervise, manage, and assess the effectiveness of Columbia Athletics Championship Performance programming with oversight of two full time officer of administration positions.

    Supervisory responsibilities include the following:

    • Accomplishes department objectives by managing staff; planning and evaluating department activities.
    • Maintains staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
    • Accomplishes staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
    • Coaches and counsels employees.
    • Develops, coordinates, and enforces systems, policies, and procedures.
    • Establishes strategic goals for the team.
  • Serve as a resource for coaches and staff.

  • Assist the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Success Through Well-Being and the Success Through Well-Being team with developing and delivering Success Through Well-Being programming, resources, and initiatives.
  • Develop and manage operating budget.
  • Oversee data management and analysis of Success Through Well-Being data.
  • Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree required
  • Minimum of four to six years’ related experience required.
  • Must clearly demonstrate the following competencies and qualities:
    • Record of successful planning, budgeting, analyzing, and managing staffing and finances
    • Manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
    • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, administrators, alumni, and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s degree and/or doctoral degree in a mental health related field preferred
  • Certification through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) preferred
  • Strong analytic focus and ability to utilize data collection and analysis software preferred
  • Successful experience in athletics administration, NCAA Division I level preferred
