Position Summary

The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, is seeking a Web Developer (Java) for a full-time, career opportunity. The successful candidate will provide solutions built on various Java and JavaScript technologies, as well as support and maintain current and future applications and sites built on such frameworks. The candidate must have skills in various Java frameworks such as JSP, Servlets, Spring, and Struts; structured JavaScript; and have experience with modern JavaScript libraries and frameworks such as jQuery, React, and Angular. Candidate will contribute to rapid prototyping, design, and development of web applications and mapping tools and implement creative user interfaces and programs to interact with back-end systems and services.


Responsibilities

  • Participates in the design, development, and maintenance of web applications based on specifications; program user interfaces and backend APIs using HTML, CSS, JavaScript frameworks, Java frameworks, SQL, PL/SQL, and other similar technologies.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of standards compliant mapping tools using JavaScript frameworks such as Leaflet and OpenLayers.
  • Completes applications development by coordinating requirements, schedules, and activities in collaboration with scientists, researchers, GIS analysts, and system developers; contributing to team meetings; presenting proof-of-concepts and prototypes; troubleshooting development and production problems across multiple environments and operating platforms.
  • Assists team members with software and system integration and maintenance by updating and maintaining software configurations for technologies such as Apache, Tomcat, Git, and CMS.
  • Updates job knowledge by researching new technologies and software products; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Contributes to development of technical documents by writing specification documents for web applications.
  • Supports users by developing documentation and assistance tools.
  • Receives direct supervision from Senior Staff Associate / Associate Director for Information Technology. 
  • Exercised independent judgment and initiative required within parameters set by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or its equivalent and a minimum of 3 years of related experience required.
  • Demonstrated programming experience with developing web sites and web applications using Java technologies (e.g. JSP, Servlet, Spring, Struts) and JavaScript libraries (e.g. jQuery, Prototype, Dojo).
  • Strong knowledge of Object Oriented Analysis and Design, Software Design Patterns and Java coding principles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and efficiently within a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work with changing priorities and multiple projects.
  • Precision and attention to detail are essential.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to do weekend and off-hour work on occasion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with developing single page applications using modern technologies such as React/JavaScript and/or Angular/TypeScript.
  • Experience with developing web mapping applications and tools using JavaScript libraries such as Leaflet, OpenLayers, Google Maps API.
  • Familiarity working with geospatial web services such as WMS, WFS, WCS, and WPS.
  • Proficiency in web-related *nix administration and Linux/Unix-style command line.
  • Familiarity with any of Drupal, PHP, Python, R is a plus.
