Position Summary

LOCATION(S): Manhattanville
SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 11am -730pm

A Carpenter is a position in the facilities department providing high quality and effective work that provides quality carpentry services to the academic, research and administrative units on the Columbia University- Manhattanville Campus(CUMVC).


Responsibilities

  • A Carpenter will ensure quality carpentry work in the planning, laying out, construction, repair and assembly of temporary and permanent buildings, additions, partitions and wooden structures and fixtures.
  • May be required to respond to any emergency on a 24 hour basis.
  • Perform and/or assist in any routine or emergency function of the carpenter position.
  • How to read and interpret SDS information.
  • Understanding of general vivarium, and laboratory rules and restrictions.
  • How to identify a fire rated barrier and properly install fire-stopping materials.


Minimum Qualifications

  • HS diploma or GED
    -3 - 5 years Carpenter experience
    -Must demonstrate minimum professional proficiency in the English Language; as defined by the U.S. Department of State.
    -Must demonstrate minimum professional proficiency in the English Language as defined by the U.S. Department of State.
    -Must be a quick learner and exhibit self-motivational skills.
    -Strong team mentality (ability to work with others).
    -Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, customers, clients, students, vendors, and management. 
  • Knowledge of and/or Training on the following:
    -Use of portable fire extinguisher.
    -Hazardous Waste awareness
    -Asbestos hazards and safety.
    -Required to complete Computerized Maintenance Management Training (work order management training) prior to end of probation period.
    -Confined space entry procedures.
    -Personal Protective Equipment
    -Infection Control procedures
    -Interim Life Safety Measures
    -Safe Equipment handling
    -Lock-out/Tag-out procedures relevant to carpentry trade.
    -Description and use of fire stopping materials
    -Communication etiquette including phone, radio, and customer service
    -Must demonstrate knowledge of all CUMVC's safety policies and procedures.
    -Must demonstrate applicable institutional knowledge and practices of the facility and its operations.
    -Must be able to work all shifts as assigned.
    -Understand fundamentals of maintenance, repair and operations of relevant building features and systems.
    -How to properly use, install, and inspect fire stopping materials.
    -Must demonstrate knowledge of CUMVC'S customer service policies.
    -Ensures positive interaction by acknowledging, greeting, and thanking our customers.

    -Reach with and work with hands and arms overhead.
    -Exposure to variable and unfavorable climate and weather conditions.
    -May work in an environment where a variety of pathogens, chemical substances, and gases are used for research. After receiving notification from EH&s that the area has clearance for work to be performed, employee(s) will be required to practice the use of proper PPE when exposed to the conditions mentioned, the use of N-95 type respirator
    -Ability to work while wearing a respirator appropriate with regulations.
    -Required to be Tuberculosis (TB) negative, submit to periodic TB testing, and a chest x-ray if a positive TB test is read.

  • -Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness for Fire Guard (F-60)
    -Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness for Using Powder Activated Tools(E-21)
    -Hold and Maintain Certificate of Fitness for Operation and Maintain Air Compressors(A-35)
    -Hold and Maintain Certificate of Fitness for supervision of Flammable/Combustible Finishing Operations (C-30)
    -Hold licenses/certifications as required by local, state, and federal regulations
    -Hold and maintain an active Motor Vehicle Class D License.
