Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of the Human Rights and Humanitarian Policy (HRHP) Concentration, the incumbent coordinates the day-to-day administration of the Concentration.


Responsibilities

Director Support--Assists the HRHP Concentration Director with curriculum development and event scheduling, including meetings, lectures and seminars. Coordinates logistics for the Director's meetings, concentration and faculty meetings, retreats, lectures, special seminars and other activities, directing student staff in making room reservations, food arrangements, preparing materials and publicity, taking minutes, and doing the related follow up. Assists the Director with and coordinates student staff efforts relating to travel arrangements, reimbursement, correspondence, and other activities as needed. Works with the Concentration Director to oversee HRHP Program Assistants. Coordinates the annual budget for the concentration, including troubleshooting billing and invoice issues and maintaining a spreadsheet of expenses.

Curriculum Support--Supports recruitment of full-time and part-time faculty and provides administrative support to faculty associated with the Concentration. Prepares statistical analyses for the Director including data on Concentration enrollment. Assists the Director with gathering and organizing and analyzing data helpful in developing the curriculum, including current and prospective curricular offerings, course evaluations, research on potential adjuncts, etc. Updates the CourseWorks sites for HRHP courses and assists faculty members in updating materials. Supports HRHP workshops, including student travel arrangements and reimbursements. Directs student staff on updating registration and degree audit forms and other concentration materials.

Student Support--Assists with student advising, including explaining Concentration requirements to students, and directing students to appropriate resources (e.g., Office of Student Affairs for guidance about curriculum requirements, HRHP faculty for advanced advising on the Concentration's curriculum), and answering questions of moderate to difficult complexity. Works with SIPA Alumni Relations to assist the Director in maintaining and strengthening ties to alumni, including helping maintain current employment and contact information for alumni and organizing alumni-student-faculty events. Works with Career Services and the Director to facilitate communication with potential employers of HRHP graduates through outreach and events. Supports fund-raising and grant management activities for HRHP workshops, special events or other activities. Manages updates and revisions of the HRHP website, Facebook Page and calendar. Informs faculty and students of changes in curriculum and keeps Student Affairs and other SIPA offices advised of changes in the HRHP curriculum. Supports the Concentration's capstone workshops, including grant support, student travel arrangements and reimbursement, publicity, final reports, plenary sessions, briefings and final presentations.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 1 to 2 years of related experience;
  • Substantive knowledge of human rights mechanisms and their applications;
  • Excellent writing and communications skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural skills;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Excellent coordination, organizational, project management and administrative skills, with attention to detail;
  • Computer and internet literacy, including spreadsheets and/or databases.   

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working for a human rights nongovernmental organization, for a research or policy-making organization, or with university students preferred;
  • Advanced degree in human rights, international affairs or a related field strongly preferred;
  • Particular expertise in research and project organization, human rights activities, and fundraising strongly preferred;
  • Fluency in a major language in addition to English strongly preferred.
