Position Summary

Dr. Abid Hussaini is seeking a Technician B to join his laboratory at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The lab is focused on understanding the neurobiological basis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) using in vivo electrophysiology, cognitive testing and optogenetic/chemogenetic techniques in transgenic mouse models of AD.


  • Work on an independent project and develop methods for analyzing experimental data, develop hardware tools for electrophysiology, optogenetic and behavior experiments and employ machine learning algorithms on large datasets.
  • Analyze large-scale data pertaining to in vivo electrophysiology and behavior data.
  • Develop and maintain Python, MATLAB and C# code for experiments.
  • Work with collaborators to incorporate machine learning algorithms into analysis.
  • Train students/staff in handling hardware and software tools.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or physics or a completed animal husbandry program or equivalent in education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of various related laboratory procedures and techniques preferred.
  • One year of related experience preferred.
  • Experience with gaming engine and software such as Unity and Blender is highly desirable.
  • Experience with machine learning is desirable.
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Neuroscience, Physics, Math, or other related fields.
  • Excellent programming skills in Python, MATLAB and C# with experience in signal processing.
  • Experience in working with electronics, computer hardware and IoT.
  • Strong understanding of experimental design and statistical analysis.

Other Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
