Position Summary

The Institute for Genomic Medicine is recruiting for a Research Assistant. The Research Assistant employs technical expertise to prepare samples for an array of genetic and genomic assays. He/she monitors the work of lower-level technicians, serves as an in-house resource person on biobanking, and assists the Lab Manager in leading the biobanking team and ensuring smooth and accurate laboratory operations.


Responsibilities

  • Independently perform a variety of genotyping assays including GWAS, TaqMan, and Sanger sequencing
  • Prepares a variety of NGS libraries and performs sequencing on NovaSeq, MiSeq and other sequencing platforms acquired from time to time
  • Perform manual or automated DNA or RNA extractions from whole blood, various tissues, buccal and saliva samples
  • Inventory, accessioning and tracking of incoming samples into the lab
  • DNA sample measurement and quality control with fluorometry and spectrophotometry
  • Perform routine laboratory management activities, including ordering supplies and maintaining inventories, preparing reagents, and managing instruments; ensure instruments and equipment are operating properly
  • Develop and test new protocols for use in the laboratory
  • Assist in training new members of the laboratory
  • Oversee the technical work of more junior technicians in the laboratory
  • Perform any other assignments deemed necessary by the Lab Manager

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, genetics, or other biological field, and at least 1.5 years of related experience or equivalent in education, training and experience.

 


Other Requirements

  • Experience in a molecular biology lab, including knowledge of relevant equipment, materials, and terminology
  • Strong organizational, detail-orientation, and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to work independently, under minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate laboratory results to more senior personnel
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
