In collaboration with the Office of Student Life and the Dean of Students Office, the Assistant Director of Residence Life & Housing plays a key role in supporting student wellness and students in crisis and in overseeing residential development initiatives that foster curricular and co-curricular engagement for the approximately 750 GS Undergraduate and Postbaccalaureate Premedical students living on campus.
Residence Life: Educates GS residents on the policies and procedures of GS Housing and Columbia Residential. Responsible for the research and launch of new Residence Life staff-led programming to support the student residential community. Tracks, reports, and evaluates all Residence Life and Resident Advisor initiatives. Directs the GS Resident Advisor program which includes training, hiring, supervising, and evaluating an RA staff. Evaluates growth of the GS Resident Advisor program to meet the expanding needs of GS students living in housing.
Emergency Response & Student Wellness Support: Manages student outreach, resource referral, and follow-up on a variety of student issues, including mental health and financial and housing insecurity, by working closely with the GS Dean of Students Office, Columbia Public Safety, Columbia Residential, Columbia Health, and other campus partners. Manages emergencies for GS students living in housing including, but not limited to, interfacing with Columbia Public Safety, collaborating with GS Deans on call, assisting with medical transports, conducting in person residential wellness checks, and visiting residents that are in the hospital. Participates in an on-call rotating schedule with the Wellness Deans.
Housing: Sits on the GS Housing Committee and represents GS at the university-wide disability housing accommodations committee. Manages, tracks, and follows up on current GS student housing issues that are brought to the GS Housing Committee. Serves as GS Housing Liaison with Columbia Residential. Manages the housing extension process and part-time enrollment process for GS students. Develops opportunities to connect GS students to off campus housing options.
Events: Assists with the planning and execution of all events sponsored by GS Residence Life and the GS Resident Advisors. Ensures event budget targets are met in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Student Life.
University-Wide Collaboration: Fosters a relationship with Columbia Residential to collaborate on housing logistics and student support, as well as the Residence Life and Student Life offices at Columbia College, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Barnard College to collaborate on residential development and community building initiatives.
This position requires 24 hour on call availability to monitor student emergencies during the assigned on call week. Needs to remain local in order to address issues at other times. Travel beyond the local area needs to be approved in advance for proper coverage to be assigned.
The incumbent is required to live on campus or near campus and housing may be available.
This position requires night and weekend availability.
Performs other tasks and projects as required.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required; advanced graduate degree preferred. Minimum of 3-5 years of related experience working in residence life and housing in an academic setting required. This position requires night and weekend availability. Must be able to adjust to multiple demands and shifting priorities and be a team player. Must possess excellent interpersonal, communication, leadership, and organizational skills. Knowledge of MS Office required.
