The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking candidates for Fellow in Research Administration positions. The term of appointment is one year with the potential of extension to a second year. This Fellowship is designed for those holding a Ph.D. or MS who seek experience in research administration and proposal management and is appropriate for scientists who plan to transition from bench research to research administration. The fellowship will provide experience with the administrative, policy, and operational issues in academic research and including research development, strategic planning, operations, communications and education, and training. The Fellow will gain experience in research administration through the HICCC’s research initiatives and projects that support Columbia’s cancer research community. The Fellow will report to the Associate Director for Administration at the HICCC.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assist with projects and initiatives to promote the growth of the HICCC’s research mission, including the HICCC’s Developmental Research (pilot grant) programs and diversity initiatives, education and training initiatives, shared resource operations, and to improve research administration.
- Undertake a range of project management responsibilities depending on the needs of the Administrative Core at the time.
- Coordination of project needs, collection and analysis of data and relevant materials, evaluation of progress, and laboratory operations support.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in education, training, and experience, plus 3 years of related experience.
- MS or Ph.D. (strongly preferred) in biological sciences/biomedical research.
- Previous grant writing/submission experience preferred.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Outlook, Excel, and Word).
- Experience in establishing and maintaining effective professional working relationships.
- Experience working collaboratively and adapting to changing processes and procedures.
- Strong interpersonal skills and effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong writing and presentation skills.
- Requires flexibility and time-management skills, including the ability to prioritize among a large number of diverse responsibilities.
- Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Capability to work both independently and as a team member, ability to multi-task and respond professionally in challenging situations is essential.
