Position Summary

 

To promote the psychological well-being of the Columbia student body through crisis intervention, consultation, liaison, coordination of care, case management, quality assurance, program planning and oversight, and related functions.

 


Responsibilities

Crisis Management

 

  • Central role in triaging Same Day and other unscheduled appointments, intervening in crisis situations as necessary
  • Assists front desk staff in de-escalating situations that may arise in the reception area; assists in managing student complaints
  • Liaison to other units of Columbia Health in triaging, redirecting students in crisis
  • Clinical consultation with student-facing personnel regarding students at risk
  • Covers urgent intakes during periods of high clinical demand

 

 Crisis management: Aftercare and Coordination of Care

 

  • Working closely with the Director of Clinical Services, stays informed of unfolding aftercare plans as students are prepared for discharge from hospitals; coordinates between The Director of Clinical Services and these facilities to ensure such plans optimize access to higher levels of treatment as appropriate
  • Serves as a liaison to students on medical leave of absence for psychiatric reasons, promoting continuity of care, and assisting the Director of Clinical Services in arranging, implementing, and documenting administrative evaluations of readiness to return to school
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Clinical Services, participates in administrative evaluations as needed.
  • Serves as a liaison to Wellness Directors in each of the various schools, managing medical leaves of absence, returns from leave, and other action plans for high risk students.
  • Assists in reviewing Protocall reports and in ensuring there is appropriate follow-up at CPS or elsewhere.

 

Quality Assurance:  Case Management

 

  • Provides comprehensive case management to higher risk students and/or students with complex psychosocial circumstances as they transition through different levels of mental health care which may include hospitalization, residential treatment, day treatment programs, and ongoing intensive outpatient treatment 
  • Facilitates and participates in the efforts of the social work team in Identifying, expanding, and maintaining a network of outside providers and institutions to whom students can be referred; assists off-campus providers with credentialing for participation in the student health insurance network
  • Primary responsibility for maintaining and periodically updating the CPS referral list and referral picklists in the electronic health record
  • Ensures that all providers and facilities to which CPS refers remain licensed and in good standing
  • Periodically reviews, amends, and expands external resources referenced on relevant pages of the CPS website
  • Working with relevant personnel from other units of Columbia Health and other student-facing offices of the University, develops and updates Columbia Health wide manual of university and community resources.
  • Exercises oversight of Social Work consultation hours (e.g., ensuring adequate allocation of staff time to meet patient demand; auditing consultation notes; “marketing” the availability of social work consults; updating relevant policies and procedures, as needed; interfacing with Health Service Assistants)
  • Participates in annual performance appraisal process with respect to the case management team
  • Working closely with the Executive Director and the Associate Director for Operations, has primary responsibility for aspects of the CPS Quality Assurance Program related to:
  • Attends all CPS QA meetings; keeps minutes.
  • Maintains accurate, detailed and up-to-date log of all QA projects
  • Oversees the administration of annual peer chart audits; compiles findings into PowerPoint Presentations and written reports, and prepares feedback for individual providers in a format suitable for inclusion in annual performance appraisals.
  • Assists in the design and implementation of quality assurance projects related to the efficacy of social work consults, outreach activities, off-campus referrals, and other related projects as assigned by the Executive Director
  • Accesses and assembles data as needed by the Executive Director in a time sensitive fashion; participates in policy reviews and other related activities in preparation for re-accreditation
  • Reviews clinical records for timely completion of notes, appropriate recording of missed appointments and the like; assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of procedures to ensure that charts reflect appropriate closure in the event of unplanned termination of treatment
  • Working with the Director of Clinical Services, assists in accessing and ensuring the completeness of clinical records that have been requested by outside agencies and/or students; ensures that all appropriate consents have been obtained prior to transmittal.

 

Outreach:

 

  • Working closely with the Associate Director for Outreach, maintains a comprehensive and up-to-date database of all staff outreach activities, psychoeducational events, and the like. Takes minutes at all Outreach meetings
  • Compiles data and creates periodic reports on all liaison and consultation activities
  • Collaborates with the Associate Director for Outreach and the Executive Director in the preparation of PowerPoints and other presentation materials relevant to the Outreach program and in all aspects of marketing and arranging outreach events
  • Participates in New Student Orientation and other outreach events, as assigned
  • Designs and implements outreach events as needed

 

Participates in the preparation of the Columbia Health annual report; assembling data on outreach, professional development; staff research, publications and awards and related activities

 

Performs duties related to clinical work (e.g. collaboration with other providers and services within and outside of Columbia Health) and to other departmental business.  Maintains up-to-date and accurate patient records

 

Other responsibilities at the discretion of the Executive Director of Counseling & Psychological Services

 

Some evening hours may be required. 


Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Requires New York State LCSW license
  • Minimum of 7 years related experience required with at least three years of acceptable clinical experience.
  • Advanced diagnostic and clinical skills, particularly with respect to crisis intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with serious psychopathology (e.g. suicidal and psychotic patients).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including skill in preparing and delivering written and oral presentations.
  • Experience in case management
  • Demonstrable experience in quality assurance and compliance activities
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Proven leadership abilities

Preferred Qualifications

 

 

  • Experience in a Psychiatric emergency room or similar setting and/or inpatient experience.
  • Familiarity with local psychiatric resources and social services
  • Proficiency or demonstrated capacity to learn PowerPoint, Excel, and Qualtrics
