Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Strategic Communications and Marketing at Columbia University School of Nursing, the Senior Editorial Manager oversees all aspects of content for publication, including the School’s newsletters, magazines, news channels, and other mass media. He/she creates and edits content to be strategically disseminated across multiple electronic and print platforms. This individual will also collaborate with colleagues across Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) and Columbia University to share and leverage content. 


Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Develops content for web and print communications that reinforce the reputation of the School of Nursing. This includes interviewing sources, writing articles on scientific and medical advances, and assisting with the content planning for videotaped interviews;
  • Proposes and refines story ideas by developing and maintaining key contacts throughout the nursing school;
  • Participates in communications meetings to discuss story ideas, media angles, and strategize content for web and print communications;
  • Plans and produces content for the School’s monthly newsletter, website, and Columbia Nursing magazine, including writing articles about nursing research, general community news, and profiles of faculty, staff, and students. Actively researches the editorial stories through internal and external sources, and attends and reports on School events;
  • Hires and manages the work of freelance writers assigned to the newsletter, and Columbia Nursing magazine and other projects, and manages the editorial production schedule for both publications;
  • Writes and edits science news releases that describe newsworthy research by Columbia Nursing faculty members. This is done in collaboration with the media relations team;
  • Works with the digital marketing team to ensure content on the School’s website home page and intranet content aligns with style guidelines and is relevant to the diverse audiences that visit those sites; reviews/edits social media content;
  • Manages, updates, and maintains the School’s editorial style guidelines and ensures accuracy and consistency of style and brand voice across editorial work and communications channels; participates in fact-checking and proofreading of all publications produced by the Office;
  • Supports the development of speeches; writes and edits speeches; and
  • Oversees special projects as assigned and performs other related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education, training and experience, plus four (4) years of related experience. 

An effective communicator, capable of determining how best to reach different audiences and executing communications based on that understanding. The ability to work with faculty thought leaders and to translate complex scientific concepts into accessible content. This individual has a strong sense of discretion and good judgment with superb writing skills and organizational ability.

The successful candidate will have a solid background from prior work history in a healthcare or academic institution. Past experience working in an academic medical institution is a plus. The Senior Editorial Manager will possess a strong work ethic, be a self-starter, and have the ability to take a project to completion.  S/He will exhibit high professional standards and the ability to think strategically and to share and contribute ideas. S/He must also possess excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications

Past experience working in an academic medical institution is preferred. Experience using Drupal (CMS) is preferred.  A demonstrated understanding of the role of nursing and nursing education is strongly preferred, as well as an understanding of the issues and trends pertaining to nursing in the healthcare system.
